Swift's NetDespatch system makes for easier overnight shipping

Swift Despatch has launched an innovative web system allowing companies to manage their overnight shipments. Using NetDespatch web services, goods being shipped for next day delivery can be booked, barcode labelled and tracked online. The Liverpool-based company handles around 1000 parcels a day and is part of APC, the overnight parcel network. The NetDespatch system, called Velocity, links to the APC network for nationwide management of collections and deliveries.

Already the first businesses to use the service are singing its praises as it makes arranging collections and deliveries much easier and quicker. In the past, only the larger companies could pre-book nightly deliveries electronically, using dedicated computer implants. Other shippers had to hand write consignment notes prior to collection. With NetDespatch Velocity, everyone can simply fill out a booking form online. This automatically produces a unique consignment bar code label that can be printed on a regular inkjet or laser printer.

Formed in 1984 as Liverpool’s first motorcycle courier, Swift has grown to become the largest multi-service express company in the region offering sameday courier, overnight parcel and international express services. Owner Vince Friery was also a founder member of APC; a success story in the overnight parcel industry that now has the UK’s largest network of regional depots.

“NetDespatch’s Velocity web booking service is a really important innovation” says Vince Friery. “Once set up, anyone can simply log onto our website and book in a delivery. It is a lot quicker than hand-writing forms, especially addresses auto-entered from postcodes. It also ensures delivery addresses are more accurate which is very important. When we come to collect the shipment, labels are already produced and work is pre-booked so we can better plan our schedules”.

Velocity allows each consignment to be tracked, with confirmation of delivery sent automatically by e-mail. Being an easy to access web service, companies can check on shipments from anywhere and all previous shipment details are available instantly for checking back and producing useful management reports.
